Geopark is UNESCO’s action plan for protection and sustainable development of earth heritage. It works on conservation of unique geological landscapes, as well as the surrounding ecosystem and human landscapes. With the help of local residents, the conservation job is well carried out, and local economy is well developed. The Penghu Islands were formed by cooling lava from seafloor fissures 8 to 18 million years ago. The basalt was naturally formed into various shapes, like vertical, tilted, radiated, lodging, etc. The exposure surface is onion weathering. The aragonite inside vesicular basalt is particularly precious.
Penghu County Government has cooperated with Forestry Bureau, Council of Agriculture Executive Yuan, since 2001 and has completed geological environment and landscape tourism detailed planning of Jibeiyu, Xiaomenyu, Kuibishan-Chiyu, Tongpanyu, Wangan Island, Cimeiyu, and so on. Penghu government also established “Penghu Marine Geopark Center” in 2015 by cooperating with Taiwan Geoparks Network and referring to Hong Kong and Japan’s planning rules for geopark establishment. This plan will refer to Penghu National Marine Geopark’s zoning plan: 4 existing natural reserve/ protection areas in the core zone, and 6 natural memorials and 10 important natural landscapes in the buffer zone. Also, the surrounding community and environment will be set as sustainable use zones and management strategies will be made according to its goals.
