Tsaoling is the easternmost village of Yunlin, bordering Chiayi and Nantou counties. It is at the central location among Alishan, Fenci Lake, Sitou, Rueili. It has an altitude of 450 to 1975 meters and is surrounded by mountains. Moreover, there are various pot holes, waterfalls, torrent, landslide areas, fold terrain, middle altitude broad-leaved forest, Japanese Cedar, tea plantation reclamation, Moso bamboo, kueichoulin formation, Camellia tree garden and plum tree forest. All these have made the area become a famous recreation in Yunlin/Chiayi area. In the appropriate season, the air circulation and coagulation will form sea of clouds, which is very spectacular. Tsaoling has always been a popular tourist spot until the 921 Earthquake in 1999, when the Tsaoling Ten Most Renowned Scenes were severely damaged and a new landslide dam, Tsaoling Lake, was formed. The lake was filled with debris and rocky mud flushed down from the upstream during heavy rain. The rapidly changing landforms of the area demonstrate the sensitivity of the landform to natural power of quakes and rains. Tsaoling Geopark is promoted by Tsaoling village and supported by various levels of governments. Its national geopark status was affirmed through an opening ceremony in 2004.
